Five-letter words, letter by letter

Five letters is the most useful length in word games. It is the whole of Wordle, it is the play that most often reaches a premium square in Scrabble without contorting your rack, and it is short enough that the patterns are worth learning. Here is the whole set broken down by where it starts.

By opening letter

The common column is the one to pay attention to if you are here for Wordle. A letter with a big total but few common words, like X or Z, is a poor thing to test early. Example words link straight into the Wordle solver.

Highest scoring five-letter words

On bare squares, before any multiplier. The pattern is obvious once you see it: doubled high-value tiles. These are worth recognising, because a Z or a J on your rack changes what you should be looking for entirely.

Why five letters is the sweet spot in Scrabble

A seven-tile bonus is worth chasing but comes up rarely. A three-letter play scores little and wastes a turn. Five letters spans the distance from the centre star to the nearest double word squares, fits in most gaps that open up mid-game, and leaves you two tiles rather than an empty rack.

If you are looking for one length to get good at, this is it.

Questions

How many five-letter words are there?

8,636 in our list, of which 3,088 are common enough that you would recognise them without looking them up. That gap matters: Wordle draws its answers from a curated set of ordinary words, so the smaller number is the one to think about when you are guessing.

Which starting letter has the most five-letter words?

S leads with 1,056, followed by C at 665 and B at 589.

At the other end, X, Z, Q are the thinnest, which is useful to know: confirming a rare opening letter narrows the field far more than confirming a common one.

Why does the list include words I have never seen?

Because it is a word-game list rather than a vocabulary list. Everything in it is valid in Scrabble and Words With Friends, and that includes inflections, dialect words and technical terms that never come up in ordinary reading.

For Wordle purposes, treat the common column as the real list and the rest as words you could play but will never be asked to guess.

What are the highest scoring five-letter words?

JAZZY at 33 points leads, and the top of the list is dominated by doubled J, Q, X and Z. On plain squares these are the best five-tile plays available, though in practice landing a ten-point tile on a multiplier beats picking a marginally better word.

Is a five-letter word a good Scrabble play?

Often the best available, yes. Seven-tile bonuses are rare and six-letter plays are awkward to fit, so five letters is the length that most often combines a decent score with reaching a premium square. It also leaves two tiles on your rack, which keeps your next turn workable.
